Relieve stress. Stress really does cause weight gain and prevent weight loss because it triggers the hormone cortisol which grabs onto fat in your body and won't let go. Decrease stress and the hormone will decrease as well, releasing fat stores. If you've had a stressful day try this trick: take 15 minutes for yourself and do something, anything, you like to do. Read an inspirational book or a romance novel. Work in the garden. Putter around your potted plants. Listen to your favorite music. Stroke your cat or play with your dog. After you've had a chance to unwind you'll be less stressful.

Drink water. Even better drink ice water. Water flushes toxins from your system and is important for good health. Drinking ice water can help you lose weight. It takes about 25 calories worth of energy for your body to warm your system back up to normal after drinking a glass of ice water. Drink 8 glasses a day and not only are you on your way to a healthier you but you'll burn up about 200 calories.

Brush your teeth right after dinner. Snacking at night watching TV can be a dieter's downfall. Brushing your teeth signals your mind that you're through eating for the day. Brushing also makes food consumed shortly afterwards taste a bit weird.

Eat everything from a plate, sitting at the table. Most of us don't realize how much food we consume on the go, from grabbing a doughnut as we rush out the door to eating a fast food dinner on the way home in the car. Putting your food on a plate and eating it at the table slows down the eating process which means your brain has a chance to tell your stomach it's full. Slower eating means you can taste the food and enjoy it. Eating at the table and not in front of the TV, even for snacks makes you aware of how much you're eating.

Don't deprive yourself but don't be a little piggy either. If you are craving a chocolate cookie no matter how many celery sticks you eat you're still going to crave that cookie and eat it anyway. If you want ice cream, portion out a 1/4 cup then put the ice cream container away. Savor the creamy taste, the coldness against your tongue the richness as the ice cream slides down your throat, and then you're done. You don't need to eat half the carton of ice cream to feel satisfied.
