Right after high school graduation, I took a trip with a local youth group to a huge water park. They had everything from slow tubing rides to water slides that were three stories high. For some reason, I covered my back and shoulders with tanning oil instead of sun screen, and then proceeded to play in the water for the next seven hours.
By the time we left for dinner, I was feeling a bit nauseous, and by the next morning, I was covered with blisters as dense as bubble wrap. For the next several days, I was unable to wear a shirt, could not lay down to sleep, and the blisters started leaking a green puss. My skin was so sensitive that even the glow from the television seemed to hurt.
It was obviously serious, so my family took me to the doctor. I was given an anesthetic spray and put on a course of steroids and antibiotics to keep the infection that was starting in my skin from becoming life-threatening. There was even talk of hospitalization, but luckily it didn't come to that. After a few days, the fever in my skin subsided and it began to heal. I was warned by our doctor to be very careful how much skin I exposed to the sun for the rest of my life, because my tanning oil mishap now made me a risk for skin cancer.
Even without the oil, the sun exposure the average Californian gets can lead to a risk of skin cancer. Because of that, the Californian skin care industry has always been very large and important industry. It's especially important to find the right skin care for your age and skin type. Luckily, the move towards green products has led to the production of organic and all natural skin care lines that smooth lines and wrinkles and cover blemishes as well as if not better than those products that are made from less skin and environmentally friendly chemicals.
I hope you have never made a mistake like me. Thankfully, my skin wasn't horribly scarred, but I will have to watch the freckles and moles that have appeared on my back for the rest of my life. I especially avoid products that are petroleum based, and will never touch tanning oil for as long as I live. Needless to say, I am meticulous about the amount of sun exposure I get, and hopefully, I will live a long life because of it.
