Jock itch is a fungal infection that affects the groin area, which usually involves the inner thighs, the genitals, the groin and even the buttocks. Although it does not necessary mean a serious infection, it can bring discomfort and may lead to worse skin infection. If you have athlete's foot or other fungal infection in the body, the same fungi may also cause your jock itch, thus you should also give attention on finding ways on how to treat jock itch and other fungal infections like athlete's foot.

How it develops and how to stop it

Fungi thrive well in moist, damp areas of the body especially if the area gets too warm and or if it becomes sweaty. Friction as well as environmental factors such as humidity can also aggravate the itching. Due to the rubbing of skin to skin, those areas where there are skin folds are usually affected, such as the anus. Tight clothing may also aggravate the condition.

To help you avoid this fungal infection, you have to at least avoid tight clothing. If you can't, you need to put lubricants to the areas that are prone to this infection. Keep in mind also that jock itch can be contagious so you may get it from a person who is also infected from it, so avoid sharing towels or other personal belongings of an infected person.

Also avoid athlete's foot as the fungi that may cause this may also cause jock itch. To avoid it, always make sure your feet are clean and dry and avoid walking barefoot in wet places such as public swimming pools or gym locker rooms, where fungi loves to thrive. It also helps to use anti fungal powder to make these areas free from moisture. Indeed, the first line of defense that you need is prevention.

Remedies for jock itch

However, if you had already caught infection, here are some other natural ways on how to treat jock itch.

Wash the affected area two to three rimes a day with gentle cleanser and make sure that it is dry after washing them. As mentioned, avoid tight underwear or clothing to make the area breathe. Cotton underwear is recommended.

One natural way on how to treat jock itch is to soak the affected area with washcloth with diluted white vinegar. Make sure you dry your skin afterwards. You can also make use of household bleach. You can add 1/4 cup of bleach to a bathtub full of water and soak your body in it every other day. Always make sure you dry your body very well after each bath.

Antifungal creams are also available over the counter but you can also make use of tea tree oil to fight fungi not only for jock itch but for athlete's foot as well. Fresh garlic is also a great herbal remedy for fungal infections like this.

To avoid this fungal infection to re-occur, it is important to always keep the area clean and dry, always wear breathable clothes and practice good hygiene if you are in public swimming pools and locker rooms.
