Having high blood pressure or what is sometimes referred to as hypertension can have debilitating effects if left undiagnosed. If left unchecked, this condition can cause strokes, kidney failures, heart diseases and heart attacks. This is why we should have our pressure checked at least once per year; more so if we have a history of hypertension in the family.

This condition can afflict anybody and being in the know of how to lower it is important even if we haven't been diagnosed with the condition yet. Understanding how we may acquire it is of course one helpful preventive tip and exploring various options to reduce it will provide us with a good insight on alleviating the condition.

HOW TO LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE

While having high blood pressure poses many health risks to those who have it, it is not an incurable medical condition, hence; there are effective ways to lower it. Incidentally, hypertension is usually tagged starting at 140 - 90 and higher.

1.Stop smoking! - This is one of the many causes of this ailment, because the nicotine found in tobacco constricts blood vessels which significantly increases our heart rate and thus increasing the pressure in the blood. Smoking does not only cause this medical condition, but also a plethora of other illnesses such as lung cancer.

2.Losing weight - If we are overweight, we could assume that we have excess fat stored in our bodies - unhealthy fats that also increase blood pressure. A healthy diet and regular fitness program are great steps to lower this condition; plus they also have other health benefits that will allow us to lead fuller and more active lives.

3.Lower sodium intake - In some cases, sodium can increase pressure; so watching our sodium intake could alleviate hypertension. Potato chips and other salty junk foods should be avoided as much as possible; but these are not the only foods with high sodium so we'd best check the labels before we buy anything.

4.Limit alcohol intake - Again, some people may suffer an increase in their blood pressure with regular alcohol intake. Limiting this will significantly lower our pressure and in fact, quitting on alcohol altogether may give us a much higher chance of significantly lowering our levels.

5.Relax! - Stress is one of the most common causes of high blood pressure, so learning to relax no matter how chaotic our lives may be is one huge step in the right direction. Meditation exercises or simply spending a few minutes of quiet time by ourselves will help ease our stress.

These are natural remedies too to lower hypertension, but if such options still do not normalize our blood pressure, we may have to take medication.A consultation with our doctor will help us understand the proper medication to take as well as its side effects.
