There are many things that reading does for our civilization. It is an indispensible tool for our generation.
Mainly, reading is a form of communication. Without the written word communication would be very limited.
As a result, our language would be lost as it evolved even more quickly than it has over the past few centuries. We owe the knowledge that we now have to the bookkeepers, writers, editors, and printers of the past.
The history and knowledge that we have gained throughout years of hard work would be lost without books and reading. The civilizations we know today would quickly fade and return to a more primitive state without any writing.
When we teach reading to our children, they are learning a necessary skill to survive as an adult in our culture. In America, a child who grows to an adult without the ability to communicate through reading and writing would be severely limited in pursuing the opportunities that they would otherwise be able to take.
Reading also requires the use of the brain and by using it, our brain becomes more effective. Just like exercise can keep the rest of our bodies running and healthy for a lot longer than not exercising, our brains need to be exercised to stay healthy and functioning at its top level.
Memory is an essential function of our brain. The saying "don't use, you lose it," applies even more to our memory.
With the ability to read comes the ability to learn. The ability to learn quickly will give our children advantages throughout school and as they enter the working world.
One of many advantages that our children get from the ability to read and learn is confidence. From confidence comes self-esteem.
People who have high self-esteem are able to perform better in their daily tasks because they have confidence to take risks. Our world would not be close to what it is without risk takers like Rosa Parks.
By reading, new vocabulary is picked up and enhances the language skills and the ability to speak of the reader. A broad vocabulary indicates the education level of a person.
Reading is very similar to an instrument in which practice does make perfect. Reading is one of many skills through which the more it is done, the easier and faster it is.
Unlike other mediums, books stimulate the imagination. Children love to read stories and then go act them out. A good book is an imaginary world that they create and can escape to.
While the television can and does present good stories, it limits the imagination. The imagination is what creates the pictures in a book and because the television gives those pictures to the viewer, there is very little imagination involved with it.
Parents often fight off boredom in their children during certain ages. A simple solution to chronic boredom is to teach them to love books.
Boredom can be alleviated through reading. A book is an adventure, a mystery, or a tragedy.
Reading is generally thought of as a solo act, but it really can be a social activity. For example, children often beg their parents to read them a bed time story.
The parent consents and reads them the story. Then, they talk about it and reading has become a social activity.
Reading also becomes a social activity through reading groups at school. Discussing books brings people closer together as the book they have read is common ground.
The Bible and other religious books are often discusses in ecclesiastical settings. This is another example of reading as a social activity.
Not only is reading social through book discussions, but the knowledge that a reader gains helps them to be able to carry a conversation. By reading, they will never be at a loss for words.
Reading can also be a stress reliever and relaxation technique. A book provides a quick retreat into any setting that can be thought of.
