Teenagers Are At Risk - Jobs Are Not There

In this down economy, with joblessness for all at the highest rate ever...how do you expect your young person, just starting out...to find a job? How long can you support your kid without putting the rest of your family at risk; or teach him the lesson of self sufficiency?

All good questions.

A positive attitude must always be foremost. It is essential for success, anytime, anywhere and forever. Without a positive look forward, no one can truly be productive. And, please remember, "this too will pass". Always moving forward is what we need always to instill and reinforce in our kids.

Military service might be one option. The military is a life altering experience. Sometimes, it can even be the answer to breaking ties with deviant peer groups. Certainly, it can lead to exploring and learning new skills and getting to know oneself in a different way, for better or worse.

Dad, Mom, or an outsider, may be able to give a reference to a company who is seeking new employees. Many self serve restaurants are still recruiting because people are time strapped and need fast food. This area is doing well financially.

However, does this lead to a lifetime career? Perhaps. Often no. I guess it depends on what your teen's motivation is.

Knocking on doors is an old school option; but not a very good one in current times. An influential friend might lead to an opportunity to get a "foot in the door" and demonstrate what a potentially productive employee your young person might be.

Knock on doors? Better, have an influential friend where a teen can get a "foot in the door" and show what an excellent prospective employee he can actually become. Good mentoring is a positive experience, if that can be made to happen.

These are not easy times. A teen wants to work. He wants to be able to find a job. His self esteem and positive self confidence really does depend on this one issue. Help him, in every way you possibly can, to make it happen.
