Wondering How To Get Rid Of A Cold Sore?

If you happen to be one of the people prone to getting cold sores, you may be wondering if there is any way that you can eliminate these bothersome spots. You may not have realized this, but cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. This is the same virus that can affect other parts of your body, and in all cases, herpes simplex is incurable. Though there is no cure for cold sores, you can prevent their occurrence so that you never have to worry about them ever again.

Naturally there are some prescription medications that you can get from your local pharmacy that will help with the problem. They aren't a cure for cold sores, either, even though these drugs are costly enough to seem like they should be a way how to get rid of a cold sore. Like other medications designed for these spots, prescription methods are designed to stop them from appearing and shorten the healing time when an outbreak occurs.

So if there is no cure for cold sores, why should I spend my money on costly designed drugs? Good question! There is no specific evidence that shows that prescription strength "designer drugs" are any better than all-natural remedies and treatments. So why spend big bucks on something that isn't going to be more effective than a natural product that is actually affordable?

If you aren't one who can afford any sort of treatment, there are things that you can do at home to shorten the healing time of the affected area and soothe the itching and pain. First of all, keeping the area clean is always recommended. Cleaning the entire area with an anti-bacterial product then drying it with a sterile cotton ball, swab or pad is something that should be done daily.

You should avoid touching the spot at all costs, so that you don't worsen or spread the sore. Even worse, repeated contact with the spot and picking at it can create a scar. If you are experiencing unbearable itching, cover the affected area with white toothpaste (not a gel, specifically a paste). The ingredients found in toothpaste will help dry the area and soothe the discomfort.

Then to help the cold sore go away, apply zinc to it as well as take a daily supplement with zinc. Zinc helps boost your immune system and speed up your natural healing process. Getting outside often is another good healer- not only to these cold sores but for many other skin conditions. Beyond the vitamins that you get from the sun, increased amounts of oxygen can ward off anaerobic bacteria, like herpes simplex, from your body.

The worst part of cold sores, of course, is the way they look. Everyone sees the ugly spot on your face, and it seems to last forever. Let's face it, even an hour is too long, but these blistery areas can last for two weeks and the redness they leave behind can last even longer. Remember, there is no cure for cold sores, but you can do things at home to help the condition- and prevent future outbreaks.
