There are many reasons that lead to male impotency or erectile dysfunction (ED) such as low testosterone level as we age, overweight, alcohol abuse, anxiety and smoking amongst many other reasons. For the purpose of this article, we will explore the reasons why smoking is one of the main cause of impotency.

Most men picked up the smoking during their teens out of peer pressure or wanting to look macho as depicted in movies and gangster flicks. However, cigarette smoking is so addictive that for many, that first puff will become a life long dependancy on the very harmful evil weed.

Amongst the many known health damaging consequences such as getting lung cancer and heart diseases of being a smoker is that smoking is one of the main causes of erectile dysfunction in men. Never knew that did you?

Erectile dysfunction or male impotency is the persistent inability to attain and maintain penile erection adequate for good sexual performances. Men with this problem can be very distressed over his inability to satisfy their sexual partners and the problem can be a great blow to a man's male ego.

Smoking causes male impotency when it causes fatty deposits to build up in the arteries supplying blood to the penis. This results in low penile blood pressure that decreases the flow of blood to the penis and thus resulting in impotency.

Further reduction in blood flow and circulation can also result from rapid contractions of the tissues in the penis that restrict arterial blood flow into the penis. This is a direct result of nicotine stimulation in the brain. Nicotine in the bloodstream also causes excessive outflow of blood from veins in the penis and this reduces the duration of an erection. More bad news.

Furthermore, for male smokers who want to have babies is that men who smoke cigarettes have lower sperm count and higher sperm motility rate. There are also increased abnormalities in sperm shape and function and this may lead to abnormalities for the babies.

However, once you quit smoking, sperm motility often improves although the other bad effects of smoking will only improve if the arteries are not permanently hardened or internal organs permanently damaged.

Many smokers who are impotent seek prescriptive drugs from their doctors to treat their impotency. The problem with is method of treatment is that all prescription pills that treat male impotency are inherently harmful because of their side effects.

For this reason, many medical companies have researched and have been able to produce erection pills to treat erectile dysfunction that have little or no side effects. This is because these so called generic viagra or herbal viagra pills are made from natural herbs used by traditional healers but are now scientifically blended and manufactured. Because of the herbal erection pill's natural ingredients, they are now available without prescription.

However, relying on erection pills to treat erectile dysfunction is only treating the symptom and not the cure and so, it is only a temporary measure because when the effect of the sexual enhancement pill wears off, the impotency returns to haunt the smoker.

So the best treatment for your erectile dysfunction problem is to quit smoking, alcohol abuse and all other underlying conditions that lead to your erectile dysfunction problem. So stop smoking today and improve your sexual performance.
