Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common aesthetically motivated surgeries around the world. Basically, when one says augmentation in this area, it usually entails the use of a foreign material to enhance and improve the look of the area.

Possible candidates for this operation are women, and sometimes men, who wish to make their chest larger in size or to change the appearance. In spite being a common procedure, there are risks to it which may be inescapable for some people.

Rupture or Deflation

One of the biggest risks to this procedure is the rupture or deflation of the implants placed in the area. When this occurs, it is imperative that the damaged part be removed to avoid possible complications. Since there are two kinds of implants, one must be briefed accordingly to how it may feel if one's specific part is damaged.

Silicone implants are harder to detect when they are ruptured or damaged because they are not easily absorbed by the body and may stay in the area for some time leaking. Saline, on the other hand, is absorbed quickly and the affected mammary gland may become deformed or flat compared to the other one.

Capsular Contracture

This complication is often the result of a leak in the material of the implanted additions or a scar gone hard. When silicone leaks out, it is not easily absorbed into the body compared to saline and therefore may be treated as a foreign object to which the tissues will form an opposing scar. This condition can also be the result of a breast augmentation surgery reaction of the patient's tissues.

Some individual's are prone to scarring which may be hard and lumpy especially in the muscles and tissues. The end result is unnaturally hard looking breasts.

This can be remedied by more surgery in the area but the possibility of the scarring to occur may be high depending on how prone a person may be to this occurrence. Many surgeons prefer to place the implants under ht muscles to lower the risk of this.

Mammography

The placement of foreign material in the chest area may interfere with mammography when it is necessary. In many cases, growths may not be noticeable because it obstructs the scan.

Even manual patting of the area may be affected by the presence of the foreign material. As with capsular contractures, the material should be placed under the muscle for optimum view and less possibility of obstruction.
