A lot of parents tend to overlook the feet when dealing with various problems in children. It is hard to imagine that the first year itself means a large growth spurt when it comes to the infant's foot. In most cases, the size of the child's foot can grow as much as half the length it would be when the child reaches adulthood. For this reason, it would be important to care for a child's foot problems initially such that later development does not become a problem.

The pediatrician would be an important person in your child's life and it is imperative that he or she be consulted even in case of foot problems. Toe walking is another way of describing the manner in which most children initially learn to walk. This is because they have just started to learn about walking the initial part of this includes walking either on their toes or even on the balls of their feet. At the same time, one has to remember that such a manner of walking would only be considered normal in the initial stages and should have passed after the first two years of age. Idiopathic toe walking is the term given when children who have passed the toddler years still continue to walk in this distinctive manner, simply due to habit. Talk to your doctor if you notice this toe walking accompanied by other symptoms since problems like autism and even cerebral palsy can be a factor.

Later on, there could be different measures to correct toe walking, depending on the age of the child and other factors. Leg braces and other such devices can be a possibility to correct the walk. Physical therapy is another alternative and could include some simple leg muscle stretches. Foot problems could be varied and specific medical investigation may be necessary before determining a course of treatment. For a lot of cases of foot problems in children, correcting these would be a matter of getting your child comfortable and appropriate footwear. If you suspect that your child is having trouble with his or her feet or if anything seems amiss, do give the pediatrician a call. It may be nothing to worry about but later foot development could be hampered early on and it is worth checking out. If it is ascertained that the child does have some kind of foot problem then the pediatrician should be in a position to recommend a specialist or would be able to investigate further.
