In terms of vision correction, the contact lens is a device that has long been in development and is continually improving. About 125 million people throughout the world use them. However, for those who are considering them, there are a variety of choices to make.

Contacts has been advancing throughout the years to what it is today. they offer the benefit of being able to correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, and more. They are becoming more pliable and developments have made the contact lens more permeable to oxygen. This means that dry eyes are less likely. However, certain brands offer more permeability than others.

Another development that is still somewhat limited, but becoming increasingly popular is the coloured contact lens. This can either enhance or completely change the eye colour. Light coloured eyes can benefit from colour enhancement whereas dark eyes may require an opaque type. Furthermore, special effects are also available, although usually not in a prescription strength.

A contact lens needs to be taken out every so often. These can be taken out as frequently or as infrequently as the wearer wishes. Some need to be taken out every night. Others can be left in for a week at a time while more advanced product can be put in once a month and left in. How often the it needs to be replaced is also variable. For those who enjoy putting in a fresh pair every day, there are daily disposable contacts. Some prefer to keep the same pair for two weeks to a month. The development that the contacts have gone through over the years has made it quite durable.

There are numerous other benefits that are offered. UV ray protection is now being incorporated more often in order to help prevent damage to the eyes. However, it is important to note that anything that sports UV protection needs not replace sunglasses. This is because sunglasses cover the entire eye area whereas contacts only covers a small portion of the eye. Furthermore, they do not get foggy from steam, nor are they usually affected by weather (such as rain). They also allow the user to have a full range of vision instead of it being limited to frontal vision.

However, a downside of a contact lens is that extra care needs to be taken when showering or swimming as it can be easily washed out of the eye.
