Celecoxib is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints), rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints), and ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis that primarily affects the spine). Celecoxib is also used to treat painful menstrual periods and pain from other causes. It is also utilized with surgery and other treatments to cut down the number of polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon (large intestine) and rectum in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (a condition in which hundreds or thousands of polyps form in the colon and cancer could develop). Celecoxib is in a category of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug called cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors. It works by containing the body's output of a substance that drives pain and inflammation.

How should this medicine be utilized?

Celecoxib comes as a capsule to take orally. It is normally taken once or twice a day. If you're consuming up to 200 mg of celecoxib at a time, you could take the medicine with or without food. If you're consuming more than 200 mg of celecoxib at a time, you should consume the medicine with food. Ask your physician or druggist if you're not sure if you need to consume your medicine with food. To help you remember to take celecoxib, take it around the same time(s) each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label cautiously, and ask your physician or druggist to explain any part you don't understand. Consume celecoxib exactly as directed. Don't take more or less of it or consume it more frequently than prescribed by your physician.

Are there other uses for this medication?

This medication could be prescribed for other uses; ask your physician or druggist for more information.

Ask your druggist for a list of the inactive components.

Tell your physician and druggist what prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you're consuming or plan to take.

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had any of the conditions mentioned in the IMPORTANT WARNING section or asthma, especially if you also have frequent stuffed or runny nose or nasal polyps (swelling of the lining of the nose); swelling of the hands, arms, feet, ankles, or lower legs; or liver or kidney disease.

Tell your physician if you're pregnant, especially if you're in the last few months of your pregnancy, you plan to become pregnant, or you're breast feeding. If you become pregnant while taking celecoxib, call your physician.

If you're having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the physician or dental practitioner that you're taking celecoxib.
