If you suffer from astigmatism, then you probably haven't ever considered contact lenses. However, it might be time to think again. A new generation is on the market. Using innovative technology these provide unprecedented levels of comfort. That at least is the idea. Reality often tells a different story. In this article we will put one of these new products, the Acuvue Advance lenses through their paces and see how they stack up against the competition.

Every new product needs to have a special new technology and the Acuvue Advance lenses are no different. They come with something called hydraclear and its makers say this is a true revolution.

It keeps the interior and exterior of the lenses highly moisturized through its water-loving long chain molecules. Whys is moisture important? Because (A) moisture protects the wearer's eyes from all forms of dryness related problems like redness, itching and harmful infections etc and (B) a moist surface ensures that protein deposits, debris and dust etc do not accumulate on the surface of the lens. So, anyone wearing these would probably even forget that he/she is wearing lenses.

Apart from the wide range of benefits that come with the super-moist surface also offers healthy breathability as well. In fact, the lenses manage to allow an astonishing ninety eight percent of all oxygen to penetrate through the lens - that's comfortable out plays some of its conventional competition.

To read Acuvue's marketing material you would imagine they are the only ones to have discovered this breakthrough. However, that's not the case. In fact the major names in the industry are involved in a headlong race to convince customers that they and they alone hold the key to the future. Bausch & Lomb has its product Purevision, while Ciba Vision has placed an incredible amount of faith in its Air Optix Aqua range. Coopervision, on the other hand, has another name for it: Biofinity.

Prima facae comparrison of these products is rendered meaningless. They all make the same claims and seek to do the same thing. So you could be forgiven for asking yourself what's the difference. Why should I choose Acuvue Advance lenses over coopervision, Bausch & Lomb or any of the others.

It's a fair question and there is no easy answer. However, if you look beyond the marketing and go for cold hard facts you might have more luck. The more information they provide the more reliable the product. Acuvue Advance lenses will provide information about oxygen permeability, UV blocking and moisturising properties. However, the only true test is personal experience. If it works for you, then all well and good, but if you find problems then, well, that rather answers the question for you.
