Recent developments have revolutionised the world of contact lenses. New materials make them accessible to more people than ever before. However, as more people flood into the market how do they choose between the most well known brands such as Ciba Vision, Bausch & Lomb, Acuvue and others.

To the uninitiated some of the technological terms can seem daunting. At the same time there is a wide discrepancy in terms of price between the most sophisticated products and the more basic lines. How do you tell the difference?

The first step is to familiarise yourself with the latest developments in this area. Mention the term silicone hydrogel to anyone involved in contact lens manufacture and they will go weak at the knees. Why? Well, this new material makes lenses softer and more comfortable than ever before. By increasing the flow of Oxygen to the eye, they mean you can wear them constantly for prolonged periods of time. This is vital because the eyes cannot draw oxygen from the blood. The only source is the air. If a large portion of the cornea is covered by the lens then absorbtion is obviously reduced significantly. Ciba Visions O2 Optix lenses, for example, promise owners can continuously wear the lenses for several days at a time.

These softer lenses also help sufferers of astigmatism. Previously these people would have shunned contacts. However, the sillicone hydrogel makes them usable for the first time. Unsurprisingly, this represents a huge new reservoir of potential customers and the major companies are falling over themselves to attract them. However there is so much choice that is can feel like pot luck.

Companies traditionally use information rich marketing. Ciba Vision, for example, fills its website with facts, figures and graphs. You see details on wettability, plus diagrams showing how the lens fits onto the eye. Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism, meanwhile, promotes what it calls its 'Accelerated Stabilisation process' which 'harnesses the power of the blinking eye'.

What about Bausch & Lomb? This is perhaps the most instantly recognisable name in the sector and has been going for nearly a century and a half. They're not being let down and they come up with a product called Purevision. So determined are they to communicate its benefits that they have a whole website dedicated to providing information about their family of products.

So what's it to be? Ciba Vision, Bausch & Lomb, Acuvue or one of the others in the market. We've not even mentioned Biofinity from Coopervision yet which is also worth a look. The only way to be sure is to do your research. Scan the web, look for user reports. Speak to any friends you have who may have used the product and always consult an expert. It's your eyes at stake. Remember to take good care of them.
