If you require contacts, how do you make your choice? It can feel almost possible to make an informed decision. Manufacturers don't always help. They bombard the customer with information and details - not all of which it is possible to understand. Ciba Vision lenses, for example, can never be an easy choice. There is a different choice, different performance and different variety depending on why exactly you need it.

Rival companies are just the same. We've entered a trend of information rich marketing these days. When choosing contacts, or any other complex product, you sometimes need a degree just to make sense of what you need to buy. With that in mind we're going to look at some of the major rivals and see how they compare with the Ciba Vision lenses.

The first option comes from Coopervision. Thanks to a revolutionary material called Aquaform, these offer extremely good comfort and wearability. They are designed to be softer and more wettable than other conventional products and to be worn for a continuous period of time.

A similar ethos comes from Acuvue with its Advance line of lenses. They have made them specially suited to sufferers of astigmatism. Until recently these individuals would not have been able to wear these lenses, but recent developments mean they can now trough away those ugly spectacles.

The reason is down to a revolutionary new material called silicone hydrogel. This retains more moisture and ensures oxygen passes through to the eye. Typical levels are around 95 percent which is, as near as makes no odds, around natural level. The effect of this is to mean that users can wear them continuously for several days.

The range of Ciba Vision lenses in this area is extensive. They come with a host of product information and graphs detailing the levels of oxygen, water and comfort. It looks complex, but all it seeks to do is demonstrate that once you try these contacts they will be so comfortable you'll forget you're even wearing them.

Nice in theory, but we've all been burned by marketing hype before. The only way to truly judge is through experience, but since these products normally come at about 30 pounds a pack, that can be a big expenditure for something that might not even work.

The best option is to get expert advice. An optician can let you know which product is best for you. That will at least give you the knowledge to judge the merits of various products. So, when you're looking at the material on Ciba Vision lenses, or indeed any other maker, you'll be best placed to make an informed decision.
