Finding the right long term lens can be difficult. There are so many products on the market, but which is the best? Recent advances have made use of various advanced technologies to produce ultra effective solutions. In particular a number of products have come to market which use silicon hydrogel. In this article we're going to compare three of the leading brands: Acuvue Advance for astigmatism, Purevision Toric, Biofinity Toric and Ciba Vision's Air Optix.

All four have been a two and one month duration and are aimed at sufferers of a condition called astigmatism. Their use of silicon hydrogel leads to increased comfort even for constant use.

Developed within the last few years silicon hydrogel greatly increases oxygen permeability to enhance the level of comfort and reduce risks of infection.

A product to use this technology is Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism. However the battle for supremacy in this region is ferocious with each claiming only their product offers the best quality.

First, let's look at price. Acuvue Advance can be found for around 21 pounds for a box of six. Purevision meanwhile will cost around 18 pounds for a box of three lasting roughly the same length of time. Air Optix meanwhile can set you back around 30 pounds for a three month supply.

All are average prices based on a search of the internet and prices can rise if you go to the highstreet. Prices for all these products can reach as high as sixty pounds. The lesson is clear. For best price shop around online.

However, when dealing with eyesight price should be the least of our considerations. Quality is, or should, of more importance. So how do they stack up?

Acuvue Advance for astigmatism uses what it describes as an acceleration stabilisation design to harness the power of the blinking eye. When launched it became the first toric lens to feature hydraclear. Patented by Johnson & Johnson this uses a rich wettening agent to form clear and comfortable lenses.

At the time of its launch Acuvue Advance for astigmatism broke new ground being the first lens of its kind to employ this enhanced technology. However, others have entered the field.

Purevision from Bausch & Lomb blocks proteins that can be harmful while still allowing natural levels of oxygen to reach the eye. It also works to allow natural levels of oxygen into the eye giving much improved levels of comfort.

Biofinity, meanwhile boasts Aquaform, a uniquely wettable material that enhances comfort for the eye while Air Optix, points to the high first fit rate - a sign it says that it has gone furthest to address the special needs of astigmatism.

In the end the choice will be yours. All these products have plenty to recommend them. Acuvue Advance for astigmatism, Biofinity and Air Optix all struggle to be recognised as the market leaders. In truth all have their strengths and weaknesses with their own set of dedicated fans. When choosing your lens, consult and expert and speak to others you know who may have used the products. Word of mouth is probably the most reliable indication of quality.
