Natural flu remedies refer to those remedies that focus on how to make a person recover from influenza by using natural ways and products. There are not many cures for the common flu and it generally takes its own time to recover from flu. However there are certain remedies that help in easing the pain and provide some relief. These include vitamins, certain foods, homeopathy and herbs. Some of these remedies are discussed here:

The natural flu remedies

Vitamin C: daily intake of vitamin C helps in preventing influenza. The white blood cells that are responsible for fighting diseases have Vitamin C concentrated in them. Vitamin C dosage can prevent and even shorten the duration of the cold. However it is best used to prevent flu in the first place.

Elderberry: the elderberry herb is known to support and stimulate the body's immune system and its ability to fight bacteria and viruses. It is also used in the treatment of flu by inhibiting replication of human flu virus type A and type B. The duration of the cold can be reduced by approximately four days by taking elderberry.

Garlic: garlic is both used as a preventive and a treatment measure. Garlic tablets can be taken in thrice a day till the production of mucus slows down or till its color changes from yellow or green to clear. Having antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties garlic is beneficial in the treatment of influenza and also aid speedy recovery.

Ginseng: another of the remedies is ginseng. Patients receiving ginseng reported a lower incidence of cold and flu. It also helps in shortening the duration of the cold and symptoms associated with flu. Acute respiratory illness in elderly patients caused by influenza can be prevented from the intake of ginseng.

Besides the above given remedies there are some more herbs that act as natural remedies. These are grapefruit leaf, acidophilus culture, Vitamin A, Echinacea, Zinc and Astragalus. There are some home remedies too that provide relief from flu and cold. These are as follows:

1. Gargle: temporary relief can be brought by gargling a sore throat. This helps in moistening the throat which provides relief. Warm water with a pinch of salt can be used to gargle the throat.
2. Drink hot liquids: inflamed membranes of the throat and the nose can be relieved by taking in hot liquids. These hot liquids not only prevent dehydration but also relieve congestion and soothe the throat.
3. Using a salve: cold is associated with flu and therefore constant rubbing of the nose makes it raw. A mentholated salve when placed under the nose helps in easy breathing and soothing irritated skin.

The above given natural flu remedies must be tried only in mild cases of cold and flu. But if there is no improvement in the condition of the patient, a doctor must be consulted immediately.
