When it comes to the lower cost end of the teeth brightening spectrum, you can find various brands of tooth whitening gel and smile brightening paste. These brands come in multiple varieties, like strips, trays, gels, pastes and liquids. The methods of application and duration of use range from one brand to another, too. Sometimes you have to paint your teeth, other times you brush with something; sometimes you use a product for 15 minutes at a time and in other instances you keep it on your teeth for an hour.

The big question for many people is whether tooth whitening gel is more effective than brightening pastes. With so many products by various manufacturers, it's hard to know what is better for a person to use over the other competing items. Often people think that using a well known brand will bring better results than they will get from a lesser known manufacturer, but this isn't always true.

First you have smile brightening pastes. These toothpastes come in gel and paste formats. Just as you brush your teeth with standard toothpaste, you brush these products onto your teeth when you brush. Some of these contain hydrogen peroxide, but the majority of them contain abrasive ingredients which are good at rubbing the gunk off of your teeth.

Second you have tooth whitening gel. This is typically a substance that contains a certain percentage of hydrogen peroxide, which has long been known to help in brightening your smile. One common method of application for these products is that you brush them with an applicator directly onto your teeth and allow them to sit for a predetermined period of time. The other is that you put an amount of the gel into a tray and allow this tray to conform to your teeth for the recommended time.

So which is more effective? The answer is definitely tooth whitening gel, and the reason why is really simple. Although the brightening paste contains an abrasive to rub plaque off of your teeth, brushing your teeth regularly with normal toothpaste will do the same. Both of these products contain hydrogen peroxide, but the amount of time this ingredient is exposed to your teeth is different between pastes and gels. The longer it is on your teeth, the better chance it has to whiten them. As such, tooth whitening gel is the clear winner.

Whether you opt for a tray system or tooth whitening gel, you will see results.
