The plastic surgeon will tell you weeks (or perhaps even months) in advance of your breast augmentation surgery what you need to do to ready yourself. It is imperative that you follow the instructions you are given and do not decide to disregard anything! The instructions are provided for your health and safety and are also in place to better ensure that your breast augmentation is a success.

How then should you prepare yourself for a breast augmentation procedure? To begin with if you smoke give it up for at least three to four weeks (or more) before the surgery date. Smoking can slow the healing process and that is why you need to set aside the cigarettes as you prepare for the operation.

If you like to drink alcohol then cut back on your consumption in the weeks leading up to the procedure. It would be even better if you refrained from drinking any alcoholic beverages before the surgery and well into the recuperation period. For the sake of your safety do not consume a drop of alcohol for a period of 24 hours before the operation.

Some drugs can interfere with the blood's natural ability to clot. This can lead to excessive bleeding which is not something any patient or surgeon wants to think about. Losing too much blood during breast augmentation surgery can lead to serious complications. In order to not have this happen to you, if you presently take any of the drugs listed here then stop taking them for a period of 15 days before the date for the operation. If you take a drug that you cannot live without then discuss the situation with your primary care physician as well as your plastic surgeon to come up with an alternate arrangement that will work for you.

The drugs to avoid as you prepare for your surgical procedure include:

Aspirin
Derivatives of aspirin (this includes most types of pain relievers)
Antihistamines
Diphenhydramines

If you are taking something that is not listed here then it is still a wise idea to inform the doctor who will be performing the surgery about what you are taking. This includes all prescription medications as well as over-the-counter medications. Also included in this would be vitamin and mineral supplements and any other herbal remedies. The surgeon needs to know everything possible about your past medical history and anything you are taking in order to be prepared to conduct your operation in the safest manner possible. Leaving anything out will only hurt you so make sure to disclose everything.
