Another name for the abdominoplasty is a tummy tuck. This procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon in order to tighten up loose skin in the midsection. Which procedure is used will depend on how much excess skin and tissue that a person has.

The four different procedures are the mini-tummy tuck, the standard tummy tuck, the extended abdominoplasty and the circumferential abdominoplasty or body lift.

The mini version is done in order to get rid of the bulge between the belly button and pubic bone. This method is performed when there is not a great deal of excess skin to be removed and the fat is fairly localized. The incision that is used in a mini is a curving line along the pubic hair area that will be well hidden by a bikini.

The standard method is a bit more extensive and is used when there is more redundant fat and tissue to be removed. The incision for this method is also placed along the pubic hair line but it extends a little further, from one hip to another. Because of the large amount of belly skin that must be removed, the navel will need to be repositioned, as well. The inner girdle of connective tissue which holds the internal organs firmly in place must also be tightened up during the procedure.

The extended tummy tuck's incision is similar to the one used in the standard procedure except that it extends past the hips onto the flank area. This method allows tightening in the belly area and the flank region, as well. The inner girdle is also pulled in.
The circumferential technique or body lift, is the most radical of the four techniques. The incision goes all the way around the body and allows the surgeon to tighten and sculpt the entire region, front and back. The abdominal area is tightened and slimmed as well as the buttocks and hips.

Liposuction may also be performed in conjunction with any of the processes. During liposuction, a slender tool called a cannula is inserted through tiny incisions into fatty deposits. The cannula is able to suction away the fat, leaving a leaner and sculpted look.

Each of the abdominoplasty surgeries are performed in a hospital and usually require an overnight stay. A general anesthetic is used during the surgery which takes approximately three hours. Drains will be placed during the operation to remove excess fluid and will need to be worn for a few weeks post-op.

A compression garment or abdominal binder will also need to be worn for several weeks in order to support the healing. If your midsection needs a bit of tightening up, contact a plastic surgeon to find out what technique of abdominoplasty will work for you. Soon you'll be strolling down the beach wearing your bathing suit with pride.
