Obtaining tummy tuck surgery can get you desirable results, but remember that it is a serious procedure. That means that there is a recovery period to be prepared for. Unlike some types of plastic surgery, this is not a lunchtime treatment, so get ready to take it easy for weeks. Find out how to make the recovery period easier on you.

You will likely still be fuzzy from the anesthesia after the tummy tuck, or at least in some discomfort. Because of this, you should have a friend or family member drive you home after the procedure. The abdominal area will likely be wrapped in bandages, and you will be instructed to lie down as much as possible directly following the treatment. Clearly, you will need to take at least a week off work, and plan on forgetting about your usual daily routine for at least that long.

Swelling, bruising, and general discomfort are to be expected while you recover, especially for the first few days. You will be given pain pills, and be instructed to keep an eye out for excessive bleeding, sudden redness around the incision, or a fever. In order to prevent infection, you will need to follow the advice from your doctor when it comes to cleaning under the bandages. To avoid blood clots, you will probably be advised to start walking carefully a few days afterward, and might be outfitted with elastic stockings, too.

Your stitches will probably be removed within about a week, but you will still have to wear a compression garment around the abdominals for weeks after a tummy tuck. Though you might be able to return to work and some daily activities about a week or two after the procedure, you should avoid strenuous movements for at least six weeks. So if your job requires heavy lifting or similar movement, plan on taking a lot of time off. Alternatively, you can ask your employer if you can perform some other task, such as desk duties, while you heal.

If you make it through the first few weeks without getting an infection, opening your incisions accidentally, or having to return to the surgeon unexpectedly due to an issue, it should be smooth sailing. Just listen to your doctor in order to continue the healing process. You should see results of the tummy tuck quite soon, and the scarring should continue to fade throughout the year. By then, you will likely have realized that the surgery was definitely worth the few weeks of taking it easy while you recovered.
