One of the most popular types of cosmetic procedures sought by both women and men these days is liposuction. This method is no substitute for weight loss and exercise, but it can be something that enhances each of these things and makes improvements on nature and genetics through strategic body contouring. That being said, it is not something that should be undertaken lightly, so anyone considering it should educate themselves on what it entails.

Your Reasons

Your specific reasons for wanting liposuction may vary, such as wanting to look better for your wedding or class reunion, wanting your thighs to stop rubbing together when you walk or wanting your pants to fit as well in the hips as they do in the waist.

What this all boils down to, however, is that you feel that you are too big in one or more areas of your body and you want to get smaller there. It's important to remember, though, that this is an invasive method, and shouldn't be considered lightly. Give it some thought, talk over the pros and cons with your doctor, and make an informed decision.

Your Choices

Most people don't know this, but there is more than one type of liposuction method. Though it all involves removing fat cells from specific areas of the body, each does so in a slightly different way. One procedure uses small, targeted vibrations to break up fat so it can be sucked out. This is often used for target areas that are harder to reach.

Another method uses sound waves, or ultrasound, to break up fat in a general area before going in with suction. There are variations on these methods, and you want to be sure to have your doctor explain them to you, and explain why he might want to do one method over another.

Know What to Expect

You will most likely be given a local anesthetic for your liposuction procedure, which means that you'll be fully awake but won't be able to feel anything in the area where you're being treated. After the surgery and after the anesthesia wears off, however, you are going to experience some swelling and discomfort. Your doctor will probably prescribe some pain medication for you to take for at least a day or two after your surgery, which should help.

Swelling in the area that was treated could be quite pronounced for a few days after the procedure, and isn't usually cause for worry. If you experience excessive pain or swelling, however, contact your doctor.

Liposuction can make a big difference in your body contour, past what you can achieve through non-surgical methods. It's important to remember, though, that diet and exercise is still important after this procedure so that you don't end up adding fat cells back to the areas from which they were removed.
