Geographic tongue is a condition in which map-like patterns appear in the tongue. If you have this condition, irregularly shaped red patches appear in your tongue and although these are not painful, these can be sensitive at times and may be uncomfortable. If you are suffering from this condition, find out some geographic tongue treatment and tips to help you prevent it.

This tongue condition is also characterized by the loss of the small nipple-like structures in the surface of the tongue. The cause of this may not be known but there are triggering factors that can increase your risk of having one.

Genetics is said to play a major role in people who develop geographic tongue condition, as this usually runs in the family. Moreover, there are risk factors that can increase your chances of getting those map-like patterns in your tongue.

Among the risk factors of having geographical tongue are those who have parents or other members of the family or relatives having the same condition, if you have psoriasis and atomic dermatitis, you may also be at higher risk of having a geographical tongue.

Those who have cracked tongues may also have higher tendencies of having geographic tongue. Those people who tend to be sensitive to the environment such as those who are asthmatic and have allergies are also at high risk of developing this condition.

Although this condition is harmless, you may feel discomfort or sensitive to spicy foods, and acidic foods such as tomato and pineapple, thus one of the things you can do as your first step to geographic tongue treatment is to avoid these foods that may trigger or aggravate your tongue's condition.

One of the main things you can do to address this tongue problem is to improve the nutrition of your body. Keep in mind that having geographic tongue may be a sign that you need to take more vitamins and minerals and improve your overall health. Add more foods in your diet that are rich in zinc and Vitamin B, but don't forget that it should always be a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits and healthy foods so that you will get a variety of vitamins and minerals to maintain good health and a healthy tongue. Of course, you have to make sure also that your body is able to absorb these nutrients.

Maintain proper oral hygiene as well. Of course, by taking care of your mouth, from the teeth to the gums, you can keep them healthy and disease-free. Use a tongue scraper regularly to clean your tongue for food debris and other bacteria that may later cause tongue problems.

Another simple thing you can do as first steps to geographic tongue treatment is to drink plenty of water everyday. Keeping yourself hydrated is important to help your body function well and helps in cleansing as well.

Of course, it also helps to maintain a healthy digestive system and detoxify your colon to maintain a healthy digestive system, including your mouth, and your tongue as well.
