The sun plays a vital role in our lives. Even the most primitive man knew that the sun played a vital role in the life cycle, keeping plants and animals alive to sustain us while giving us the warmth and light we need to survive, build, and thrive.

However, as time has gone by, we've come to see that it has a number of hidden dangers, particularly to our skin. As medical science has progressed, we've come to see how it can play a role in the extreme and sometimes dangerous darkening that is known as hyperpigmentation.

It is a blanket term used to describe the darkening of the skin, oftentimes attributed to excessive sun exposure or general skin damage (though there are a number of serious genetic disorders that can also cause hyperpigmentation).

It can sometimes be a warning of more serious health concerns, but at the very least hyperpigmentation can be a blight upon our appearance. Fortunately for us all, there are a number of treatments available today that can help us lessen or cure the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

One such treatment that is becoming increasingly common is the use of microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is the process by which a trained and experienced technician removes the damaged outer layer of skin in a nearly painless treatment.

It is often removed using fine particles or crystals which will gently remove the damaged layer leaving a healthy and normally pigmented lower levels intact. While the treatment will not permanently heal any defects, it is largely effective in changing the cosmetic appearance of your skin and should restore and even out some pigment.

Following microdermabrasion, it's important to limit your exposure to the harsh rays for an extended period of time to ensure that you do not damage your complexion again. Regardless, you may have to have subsequent treatments over time as your hyperpigmentation returns or as your exposure to the sun increases naturally.

To determine the time necessary between treatments, consult with your trained microdermabrasian technician and work with them on a schedule that fits within your price range and time needs. They should be able to figure out the right plan for you and your hyperpigmentation.

Whatever you determine, there's no need to fear the sun and its longterm affects on your skin so long as you practice safe sun protection and consult with your microdermabrian specialist as needed.
