What Should I Expect After Receiving Smart Liposuction?

Lipo patients may wonder how much recovery time will be needed after the surgery. Modern smart liposuction is less invasive than traditional methods, but there will still be some down time.

Post-Day Surgery

The treatment area will be covered with a tight compression bandage. It's extremely important to keep this bandage on and follow all instructions, as the bandage is part of the treatment. It not only stops bleeding like a traditional bandage, but it keeps the skin smooth for optimal results.

The doctor will most likely include a prescription for painkillers. Most patients feel some pain, particularly when moving around. While the pain is not severe, most patients need the pain relief to be able to function well.

The Week After

Many patients can go back to work the day after the surgery, but don't force the issue. If you are still having significant pain and swelling, or if you have a physically demanding job, going back to work too soon can interfere with recovery. Even desk jobs can be difficult during recovery. Since many patients have liposuction done on their abdomens, sitting at a desk can be pure torture.

By the end of the week, the swelling at the treatment area should have subsided. You will finally be able to see the results of the procedure. Take time to enjoy your smoother skin and sculpted body. In some cases swelling may persist after this, but if you are concerned then be sure to get a hold of your doctor.

The Month After

Take at least two weeks before doing anything physically demanding such as exercise or heavy lifting. As with returning to work, if you don't feel up to it after two weeks then give yourself more time to recover before dumping stress on your body. It is better to take a couple of extra days of rest then to risk injuring yourself by pushing too hard.

When you return to physical activities, start slow and listen to your body. If you start to feel discomfort, stop. If you try to "work through the pain" you could end up making things worse. If you still are having pain and swelling after two to three weeks, contact the doctor's office. Everyone recovers at different rates, but you want to be sure nothing is going awry.

Your doctor's instructions will take priority over any advice you see here. Philadelphia liposuction physicians prepare individualized recovery instructions for their patients, and your recovery will depend on your body, general health, age and many other factors.
