A rhinoplasty is the scientific name for a nose job. This is a cosmetic procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to alter the shape and size of the nose. The nose is a central facial feature that is quite noticeable. If it is too long, wide, short or crooked, it can cause the entire face to appear out of proportion. A nose which is too large can make the eyes look too close together and the mouth to appear to be too small.

During a rhinoplasty, a surgeon alters the shape of the nose by rearranging or removing bone and cartilage within in. A closed procedure means that the doctor does all of the work by going through the nostrils. An open procedure includes an incision under the nostrils to have more visibility and access to the nasal skeletal system.

It is important for the patient and surgeon to communicate clearly about the anticipated results. It is quite helpful to use "before and after" photos as a guide and a communication device. Even with excellent surgical skills and candid communication, mistakes can occur. Medical procedures are not an exact science and there are many components that depend on individual healing response.

Some of the possible complications of a nose job include:

* An abnormal shape may result from the procedure such as a dip or pinched appearing tip.
* Infection can occur at the site.
* Excessive bleeding during surgery; can be minimized by curtailing medications and herbal supplements that promote heavy bleeding.
* Burst blood vessels in the region can result in blotchy and discolored skin.
* Loss of smell can occur post-op but usually isn't permanent.
* Nerve damage has been known to occur on occasion.
* Nasal obstruction due to scarring.
* Asymmetry after swelling has receded and bones have settled.
* Slow healing due to a suppressed immune system. Cigarette smoking is a known factor in delayed healing. A patient would be wise to stop smoking or being in the presence of second hand smoke well before the surgery.
* Adverse reaction to the anesthetic during the rhinoplasty, as well as allergic reactions to surgical tape, medication and latex gloves.
* A second surgery may be needed to correct problems.

Complications can be minimized by selecting a reputable plastic surgeon that has had much experience in performing rhinoplasty. Being in good health before the procedure, not smoking, practicing good self care after the surgery and following all post operative care instructions will be very helpful in ensuring that a rhinoplasty is a success.
