With so many massage parlors and massage types available, such as Thai, Swedish, Shiatsu, Reflexology, and a lot more, a person can easily get confused and undecided which type of massage his body would need. One way of knowing the massage technique your body needs is to understand each one of them, one at a time. One of the more popular types of massage is called the Remedial Massage.
What does this type of massage mean; it is quite ambiguous if it is your first time to encounter such term. To understand it better let's start by defining each word then. Remedial means intended as a remedy in the world of massage. Massage on the other hand means, manipulation of tissues such as tapping, kneading, or rubbing, with an instrument or your hands for purposes of therapeutic results. Upon combining the terms and adding some meaning into it, the basic definition of a Remedial Massage is that it is a process of treating the human body as a whole and targets specific areas as well that requires attention.
When a person experiences body pain, it should be noted that the site of pain is the symptom therefore digging into it deeper will uncover the cause which should be the primary target of the therapy. When you apply treatment to the site of pain, it may temporarily provide relief to the person but it will not last long since the cause is still there.
An example for this is for patients who are experiencing pain in their shoulders and upper back area. Temporary relief will be experienced upon applying pressure to that area since rubbing the area will increase the blood flow. However, if the one attending to him is an expert in remedial massage, the therapist would try to probe by asking questions such as asking the person if he is spending a lot of time in front of a computer. This kind of pain is usually triggered by not observing proper posture while in front of the computer. It could mean while looking at the computer screen, that this person is hyper-extending his neck and is hunched over the keyboard. The muscles that are affected in this kind of posture are the trapezius muscle and the rhomboid muscle located between your spine and shoulder blade. These areas will experience chronic pain due to the muscles being over used and over-stretched on a daily basis.
Since the remedial massage therapist can identify the specific areas that caused the pain, then he can go ahead and apply proper massage techniques on that area with low chances of recurring. Important thing to note though would be to follow his advice and observe proper posture whatever activity you are doing.
