The connection between meditation and yoga has long been used by those in Western society for a relaxation technique and as a form of mild exercise. Most of us are probably not aware of the religious significance of meditation and yoga in India and other Asian countries in which it originated. A quick look at the history of yoga will tell us how meditation integrates into it and what it means to a different culture of people. We may find, then, some extra significance to the process and may learn to become a little bit more spiritual along the way.

Yoga, which means "union" in the language of Sanskrit, essentially refers to what is actually a family of spiritual practices that mostly originated in India. In India, it remains as a vivacious tradition for the people and continues to bring them power and forms of enlightenment to this day. There are essentially four main types of yoga: Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga. In other parts of the world, yoga has become popular in another form which is known as Hatha Yoga. This is what we come to know as the postures and poses of yoga that are used as stretching techniques.

Basic Information About Meditation And Yoga

Modern yoga practice basically involves the use of a few components, at least in terms of religious significance. In terms of our Western forms of meditation and yoga, we mostly use a tape or a DVD of a leader and take instruction on some relaxation techniques. In terms of an actual religious capacity for meditation and yoga, it certainly takes on a different form than we would be used to. This involves a guru, which is basically a spiritual leader that leads the activities of meditation and yoga to the followers and integrates some teaching into the process.

In a religious sense, there is a goal beyond the overall sense of relaxation that many of us in the Western world aim to get from meditation and yoga. Instead, they are seeking a higher level of spiritual enlightenment. In the different branches of yoga mentioned above, there are a variety of essential goals. Yoga can be used to get closer to a deistic figure, for example, or it can be used to being more enlightenment and quiet contemplative thought to the person that is participating.

If you are new to the world of yoga, finding meditation and yoga instructional information could be a bit of an adventure.
