Many women choose to have a breast lift procedure, also called mastopexy, performed because they have begun to have excessive droopiness. The medical term for the droop is ptosis. A certain amount of drooping is considered to be normal but excessive ptosis is rated in categories which range from minor, moderate to severe. There are four different methods of breast lifts that can be performed in order to correct ptosis and each type has a unique incision.

The four types are called:

Crescent Mastopexy:

Also called a crescent lift. The incision in this operation is a half circle around the top of the nipple and areola area. This method would be best for those cases where only minimal tightening is required.

Concentric Mastopexy:

This procedure is also referred to as the donut lift. The incision is a full circle around the nipple and areola area, similar to the shape of a donut. This would be appropriate as the next progression after the crescent and would offer a bit more.

Vertical Mastopexy:

The incision for this type is a vertical line below the circular incision that surrounds the nipple. It is also called a lollipop lift because the line and circle look a bit like a lollipop. This offers even more tightening than the concentric.

Formal Mastopexy:

This technique is also called the anchor lift as the incision appears to resemble an anchor. It is similar to the vertical mastopexy except that there is an additional incision in the fold of skin below the breast tissue. This method is used for the most severe cases of ptosis.

A patient, who has lost the fullness in her breasts as well as being saggy, will often opt to have augmentation performed at the same time. Augmentation entails the surgeon inserting implants filled with either saline or silicone solution in order to give a fuller look. The implants can be placed either behind the muscle or in front of it.

The various forms of breast lifts are performed on an outpatient basis under either general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with sedation. The operation takes approximately two to three hours to perform. There will be swelling, bruising and some pain which will all subside within a few weeks. It takes about six months to have a fully healed result. The scars will fade greatly in the first couple of years.

If you are interested in having any of these surgeries performed, make an appointment with a reputable plastic surgeon to find out the best variation for your body.
