Many women opt to have their breasts augmented with breasts implants every year. There are a variety of implant types as well as the incisions that are made to insert them. Augmentation is performed by a plastic surgeon on an outpatient basis and takes approximately one to three hours to perform.

Implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes and textures. They come in a rounded or a tear drop shape along with the choice of low, moderate or high profile protrusions. The round ones are of a smooth texture and the tear shaped devices have a rough texture in order to curtail slippage. They are filled with either a silicone substance or a saline solution. There are pros and cons to each and every type that would be best discussed in detail with the plastic surgeon.

Incision sites include inframammary fold, periareolar, transaxillary, transumbilical and transabdominoplasty. Which insertion site is best for you will depend on many factors such as breast size, skin type, concurrent procedures and scar minimization.

The inframammary fold incision is made in the crease below the droop of the breast. This choice can be one of the simplest methods, but will leave a visible scar if there isn't enough of a droop to hide it.

The periareolar type is placed around the nipple and areola.

This can be a fairly effective way to hide scarring as the scar tends to blend into the darker color of tissue which is present in the areola. This incision works most easily with saline filled implants because they are filled after they are placed in the tiny opening.

Transaxillary means through the armpit region. The surgeon would cut an opening in the armpit area and tunnel the implant through to the breast area. Scars are fairly well hidden with this method. In the transumbilical method, the implant is inserted via an incision made in the belly button area. This can be an effective way to hide scars unless the patient often wears midriff tops and bikinis.

At times, the implants can be inserted through the opening which is made during an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure. This method is called the transabdominoplasty.

The augmentation procedure is often performed concurrently with a lift procedure. If the tissue is stretched out, it may need to be tightened before inserting the breast implant in order to have the optimum result. During the initial consultation with your plastic surgeon, he or she will be able to determine the appropriate procedures for your body.
