There are alternatives to paying for a gym membership, namely you can set up a gym in your home. Although the up front cost may be more, it will be much more cost effective in the long run. You can also save money by buying used equipment. A lot of people buy brand new gym equipment with the ambition to use it, and then end up selling it a year later almost completely unused.

You can exercise more often with a home gym. Going to the gym is an event for most people because you need to block out time, drive there, change, and drive home. you can exercise whenever you have free time. You can exercise in smaller spurts of time. You can exercise at all hours of the day. Most gyms are not opened 24-hours a day.

In a home gym you will have less distractions. There is always a lot going on in gyms. There might be people trying to talk to you, give you advise, or pick you up. You may have people impatiently waiting for the equipment you are using, or you may be left waiting for a piece of equipment. You also may be held back at a commercial gym out of fear of looking stupid in front of others. you can try new exercises without feeling weird of self-conscience.

Although you will need room to set up a home gym, you can really do it with minimal space. You can focus on equipment that either folds up easily or that doesn't take up a lot of room to begin with. For example, you don't have to get the bigger stepper machine with the handles, computer, drink holder, etc. You can buy a perfectly good stepper that has no handles and can fit under a table or bench when you are done. You can buy a mat to do floor exercises on, which can be easily stored when not in use. You can also buy a treadmill that folds up. Ideally, you can have a home gym set-up in a multi-purpose room, and still have room for other things.
