Eczema is the bane of mankind. It catches you at any moment, which is most moments, and you want to out-scratch your fleabag of a pet. Eczema is no joke. It appears suddenly and if not treated immediately, will end you up with oozing lesions you want to scratch off. Drugs may have side effects but natural eczema treatment is a safer option.

Common Medications for Eczema

Steroid applications are the conventional treatment for eczema. The medication does stop the itching but after prolonged use, skin thins out becoming more vulnerable to bacterial infection. If you have persistent eczema, this becomes a problem.

Antihistamines are commonly used to treat eczema. Fact is, the drug does not cure eczema but lessens the inflammation and the itching. If you are using the older histamines, you will find yourself falling asleep behind the wheel. The newer antihistamines eliminate the problem but with continued use can cause intolerance to the drug.

Natural eczema treatment is an alternative to the side effects of drugs. These are sourced from plants which contain medium chain fatty acids or MCFA, such as the coconut that grows abundantly in the tropical islands.

Natural Eczema Treatments

The coconut, or cocos nucifera, is noted for its healing properties. The coconut meat is processed into oil which is applied on skin affected with eczema. As a healing agent, coconut oil promotes tissue healing and repair and significantly improves the body's processing of fatty acids to protect these from oxidation. As an emollient, it softens skin and relives dryness and flaking. Virgin coconut oil is also noted for supporting the skin's natural chemical balance.

Flaxseed oil has been used extensively for eczema treatment. It contains Omega 3 and Omega 6. Directly applied on the skin, it soothes the thick flakes and lessens the itching. The natural oils also moisturize the skin, which is very important in the treatment of eczema.

To enjoy the full benefits of natural eczema treatments, include flaxseed oil or coconut oil in your diet. The fatty acids will boost the immune system and prevent the clogging of the pores. Without sufficient fat in cell membranes, these are not able to lock in water and the cells lose their elasticity.

Probiotics have shown to reduce eczema in children. Probiotics are live good bacteria that act on the digestive system. The good bacteria stop the growth of harmful bacteria while strengthening the protective layer of the digestive tract.

Try the cream concoctions using extracts of witch hazel, licorice and chamomile. These have reduced symptoms of eczema. Evening primrose oil, which contains gamma linolenic acids, has shown positive action on reducing swelling but does not treat eczema.

If you have been suffering from eczema and getting tired of its frequent 'comebacks', try the natural eczema treatments available. But before you do, seek a doctor's opinion first because your skin irritation may be something else. Your doctor might tell you that there is no cure for eczema. Applying natural eczema treatments rather than drugs are better and safer options.
