Visiting the dentist every two years is vital to maintaining the health and well-being of your mouth and body. Many serious conditions are treated and prevented through these visits.

Occasionally, a dentist will prescribe a dental implant. A dental implant is a metallic tooth replacement.

The implant is place in the bone of the jaw by a dentist. The bone then heals around the implant and allows the dentist to attach a fake tooth.

The implant is usually made out of titanium. Titanium is a metal that the human body accepts most of the time.

Implants are usually needed as teeth are lost due to age or decay. The dentist will examine a patient in this condition and determine whether or not they have enough bone to be able to support implants without too much damage.

The implant has to be inserted through a surgical procedure. This procedure ensures that the implant is not rejected by the body.

In the surgical procedure the dentist will have to cut through the gum and insert the implant. The dentist will them sew the gum up over or around the implant.

After the gum and bone heal for several months, the dentist can then add a prosthetic tooth. This surgical procedure can be performed by a regular dentist, Oral Surgeons, Periodontists, Prosthodontists, or General Practitioners.

However, before you begin selecting someone to perform the procedure it is important that a regular dentist or practitioner is consulted with. They will determine if dental implant is needed and be able to give suggestions on who would be the best one to perform the procedure.

The implant procedure will usually cost between $1500 and $2000. However, this price does vary depending on who performs the procedure and other complications.

Dental implants are an ideal permanent solution for many people who have faced tooth loss. Occasionally there are complications with the placement and it will have to be re-done.

In other instances, the restoration will need to be repaired or replaced. These replacements and maintenance do have additional costs.

Dental implants are an ideal solution for most people. However, occasionally dental impacts are not recommended for patients with uncontrolled diabetes or who have complicated psychological problems.

Those with other major medical compromises or who are missing a lot of their jaw bone are also not recommended to get dental implants. Those who are missing bone can receive a bone graft.

Once the bone graft has completely grown and healed, the patient can then receive dental implants. However, a dentist should always be consulted before a bond graft is implanted.

Generally the dental implant procedure can occur under local anesthesia. In comparison with procedures that require general anesthesia, the dental implant procedure is less risky.

There are several things you can ask about to avoid complications if you are thinking about getting a dental implant. Start by asking your friends and family if anyone else you know has received an implant.

If there is, talk to them about who performed their surgery, what you can expect, and how successful their implants were. These conversations will help prepare you mentally and give you ideas of who you should or should not hire to perform the procedure.

The best specialist to hire to perform the procedure is a Board Certified Prosthodontist, but they usually charge more as well. As you sign up for the procedure, get a copy of the treatment plan and read the fine print to make sure you are not surprised by hidden fees.

You may want to get a second consultation so you can compare prices and surgeons. Your surgeon should be confident, but humble and extremely thorough in his or her work.

It is alright to ask questions like how many of the dental implant procedures has the dentist performed that have been successful. Ask about the number of failures too.

These are all good things to know before going through with the procedure and the knowledge will help ensure you the best results.

Dental implants can improve a person's self confidence, ability to eat, and overall well-being. This procedure is not something that should be feared, but looked into.

It is both an interesting field, and a very helpful procedure.
