Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed in the country. No longer reserved for models and celebrities, this procedure is improving the self-confidence and image of thousands of normal women of all ages who are seeking natural looking breast enhancement.
Women normally choose to have breast augmentation for two primary reasons. One is due to changes in appearance due to childbirth, weightless or aging. These life events can cause changes to the volume and shape of a woman's breasts. In these cases, the procedure is often performed along with a breast lift. Other women are simply dissatisfied with their breast size, feeling that they are underdeveloped.
They may feel uncomfortable wearing a swimsuit or have trouble finding clothes that fit properly both around the hips and in the bustline. It will not improve their situation to come out of the surgery feeling with huge, artificial-looking breasts that they feel just as self-conscious about. There are other advantages as well-an implant that is too large may stretch the nerve supply and negatively affect sensitivity.
Choosing a doctor
When selecting a doctor, be sure to make your goals known - be clear that it is important to you to achieve a natural look. Review the surgeon's before and after photos. Ask him or her to identify before photos which are similar to your own and point out those of which you like the end results. If you have selected a doctor with whom you feel comfortable and trust to have your best interest in mind, they will work with you to help you achieve your goals.
Selecting the implant
Take an active role in selecting the type of implant used and the placement as both can affect the end result. Anatomical, or tear-drop shaped, implants are also available having been invented to create a more natural looking silhouette. Implants also come in different volumes, projections and widths, so work with your doctor to select the one that works best with your body type.
If the doctor recommends something slightly different then what you liked in the "after photos", have an open mind as different products will look different depending on the size and shape of a woman's chest. Use cup size as a general guide rather then your only factor, keeping in mind that cup size can vary by manufacturer. It's also common for implants to appear smaller then natural breast of the same size.
