Many women suffer from Bacterial Vaginosis. It is the most common vaginall infection that occurs in women of child bearing age. The frustrations surrounding it are due to the fact that the cause is still unknown and reoccurance happens in about 6 out of 10 women. It can a very embarrassing situation to deal with your sexual partner because of the fishy odor it eminates. Multiple trips to the Doctor for antibiotics, both in pill form and cream, still leave many women with only temporary relief of symptoms. Most women report a return of the infection after their menstrual cycle. This can be very frustrating.

There are home remedies that have worked for many women which will be discussed here. The overall problem is the overgrowth of bacteria and the lack of the"good" bacteria that the vagina needs to maintain balance. For this reason, many women find relief in eating yogurt three to four times a day. Some women also combine eating the yogurt with inserting a tampon filled with yogurt into the vagina when they go to bed at night. The yogurt contains Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium which are the "good" bacteria.

Other women have found relief with the use of Folic Acid tablets. Increasing the amount of acidity in the diet is also another way to keep the infection from returning once it has cleared up. Eating fruits like oranges and grapefruits and drinking lots of orange juice has been beneficial to aid women in preventing flare ups.

Another home rememdy used to combat Bacterial Vaginosis is putting 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide or apple cider vinegar in the bath water and soaking for 30 minutes. Dipping a tampon in tea tree oil and then inserting it into the vagina is another method that women have had sucess with, especially those with lots of discharge.

Once the odor and discharge have subsided, it is important to take steps to prevent the infection from returning. To achieve this, the vagina must be kept as dry as possible. Wear cotton underwear, immediately take off swimwear when you are done swimming and make sure to thoroughly dry the vaginal area after urination. Some women even use a blow dryer to make sure that there is no residual moisture left surrounding the vagina after showering or bathing.
