There is a type of yeast that is sometimes found living naturally in our bodies, called Candida (or Candida albicans). It is classified in the same group as molds, fungus and mildew. Candida successfully thrives in moist areas of the body that are hidden from the sunlight such as the mouth, in between folds of skin, ears, groin, under fingernails, underneath teeth and in the vagina.
Candida is not normally a problem when we take care of ourselves properly. It is capable of living in balance with our bodies. It is very important to prevent Candida because once it becomes a problem it can recur and is hard to treat with conventional medicine.
There are several symptoms to be on the lookout for: Depression, fatigue, trouble thinking straight, bloating in the stomach area, changes in menstrual cycle, constipation, headaches, diarrhea and skin infection. Nobody is immune to Candida. It can occur in men, women and children but is most common in babies and those with a compromised immune system.
Candida Albicans is the type of yeast infection that occurs most often. While the immune system is weak it takes over and the toxins it creates enters the blood through the wall of the colon. This puts the rest of the body in danger of infection.
Any number of things can trigger this type of infection: Chemical poisoning, use of steroids or antibiotics, low quality diet, birth control pills, stress, hormone changes related to pregnancy, poor hygiene, PMS, allergy or menopause.
There are many prescription and OTC drugs available to help treat Candida albicans including: creams, oral drugs, anti-fungal prescriptions and probiotics. The doctor will likely prescribe one or several of these to help knock out the infection.
There are also a handful of homeopathic steps you can take to deal with an infection. Taking more vitamins can help to strengthen your body. Acupuncture and immunotherapy have also been found to be helpful in treating Candida albicans. You should talk to your local homeopath and your regular doctor before trying to deal with your infection with herbs. The ones that have been found useful for treating this type of infection are lemon grass and Pau d'arco bark. They both are effective at killing off bacteria and fungus as well as removing toxins from the body.
As I said earlier it is better to prevent an infection than to treat one. Make sure that your diet is low in carbohydrates. Avoid using antibiotics frequently. Make sure that you wash and dry the groin area and in between the toes thoroughly and often. Your pants should fit loosely and cotton underwear is the best choice because this helps to keep your groin area dry.
