Pain comes in all different flavors from shooting and throbbing to stabbing. Only rare individuals will say that they actually enjoy it, though. Sometimes pain only lasts for a short period of time, such as when you stove your finger. Other times it can last for a long time but will go away if it is treated right away. Some people deal with a different type of pain that does not go away and is really hard to control. This is called chronic pain.

Mild pain is not too much of a problem for most people. It normally goes away on it's own, or with the help of Over The Counter (OTC) drugs.

Moderate pain is not as easily controlled as mild pain and makes it hard to do things you would normally do. This type of pain normally requires a visit to the doctor and you might receive a prescription for a stronger pain medication than you can buy OTC.

Severe pain is very serious and can make it impossible to take part in your daily routine. If you are dealing with this then you should go to the doctor or emergency room right away to find out what is wrong.

There are two different categories that include all different types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain lasts only for a short time and goes away as the body repairs itself. This type of pain can be mild, moderate or severe. Chronic pain keeps nagging at you and stays around for a long time. It can also be mild, moderate or severe. Most of the time chronic pain is a result of something else going wrong with your body. Cancer, depression, arthritis and back pain are all examples of things that can cause chronic pain.

Chronic pain can really put your life to a stop if it is not treated correctly. Combinations of different treatment options is often the best way to deal with it. Prescription medication is often at the forefront of a treatment program. Other things that can help are: Acupuncture, counseling, hydrotherapy, naturopathy, physical therapy and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS).

You will also need to make sure that you are doing what you can with your personal habits. Make sure that you get plenty of rest and eat a quality diet that has plenty of Vitamin D in it. Exercising regularly also helps to keep your body strong and can help a lot.

If you choose to supplement your prescription with some natural supplements then talk with your doctor and a homeopath. Some of the herbs that can help manage pain and give your body a boost are: Arnica, Matricaria Recutita, Fillipendula Almaria, Symphytum Officinale, Devil's Claw (inflammation), Magnesium Phosphoricum and St. John's Wort (depression).
