Backaches are very common and are best described as pain in the lower back that is either severe or minor. The lower part of the back has to work really hard because it is responsible for carrying both the weight of your upper body and the rest of your weight. Many things can cause a backache including: a tumor, injury, aging or a disease. Backaches can become worse when bending forward or trying to lift an object.
A backache can carry over to pain in the legs in older people. This is in part due to the added pressure that is put onto the nerves in the spine. Most backaches can be described as either acute or chronic. An acute backache comes out of nowhere and is often incredibly painful. A chronic backache can be caused by just about anything and often sticks around for months at a time.
When you go to the doctor they will give you a complete physical and ask many questions about the symptoms of your backache. They will want to know how long it has been going on, what you were doing when it started and what it feels like. You want to make sure that your doctor knows about any previous problems with your back and about any back related injuries that you have had in the past. Some of the tests the doctor will perform might include: Xray, Electrodiagnostic exam, MRI, Myelography, Discography, CT scan or a Bone scan.
If the symptoms, that you are experiencing, are mild then you can use a hot water bottle or heating pad to offer some relief. Mild OTC pain relievers can also help. Try using either ibuprofen or paracetamol to help lessen the swelling and give some relief from the pain. Major backache symptoms can be dealt with by using muscle relaxants, injections, analgesics and NSAIDs.
In many cases, the doctor will recommend physical therapy. TENS (trans-electrical nerve stimulation), EMG feedback and spinal manipulation are the types of physical therapy that are most often prescribed.
If you like to stick to a natural routine then you might try either meditation or yoga. Both of these can be extremely beneficial in helping to ease your back pain. Just make sure that you start off slowly. Also, there are a number of natural remedies that can help you to attack the problem at it's source. Devils claw is extremely beneficial in helping to keep your back healthy and strong. Glucosamine sulphate has properties that strengthen both your joints and cartilage. Boswellia serata helps to keep you mobile by giving benefit to your joints and muscles.
