When the membrane lining of the large intestine or bowel becomes inflammed, this is called colitis. There are many different things that can cause colitis to occur. Colitis is also the shortened name for ulcerative colitis where ulcers and inflammation occurs in the topmost layers of the large intestines lining.

When the colon or large intestine becomes inflammed then it must empty itself. It does this in the form of diarrhea. If the cells lining the colon are killed off then ulcers can form which produce pus and mucus, or could start bleeding.

If you suspect colitis then it is time to pay the doctor a visit. They will take a close look at your abdominal region and other applicable body systems. A rectal exam might be used to check to make sure that there is no blood in the stool. X-rays are commonly used to make sure that everything in the colon is alright. A sample of your blood might be taken for further testing.

There are a great number of symptoms that can be caused by colitis: Pain, bleeding from the rectum, muscle spasms, swelling in the colon, diarrhea, lethargy, anemia and bowel movements with blood in them are among the most common. If you are losing weight and have diarrhea chronically then this could be signs of inflammatory bowel disease.

There is no clear cut cause for colitis. It is believed that our own immune system is reacting to a virus or bacteria and in turn causes the intestinal wall to become inflammed continuously.

A treatment plan will depend on how severe your symptoms are. Mild colitis can often be controlled by drinking plenty of clear fluids. OTC (Over The Counter) medicine can also be used to help control the diarrhea and keep bowel movements to a minimum.

If the colitis is serious you might have to take prescription medication, steroids or antibiotics on a continuous basis. It is smart to eat foods that are low in fiber and avoid dairy products when symptoms are occuring and shortly thereafter.

Keep a diary of which foods agree with you and the ones that make your colitis act up. This is probably the most important thing you can do to help yourself.

If you are leery about prescription drugs then there are several herbs that can help support your body naturally. German Chamomile can help to reduce the inflammation and spasms that colitis causes. Meadowsweet is also a great anti-inflammatory that is protective of your digestive system. Use Slippery Elm to aid against pain and stomach irritation. Be sure to let your doctor know that you are incorporating some natural remedies in your treatment plan.
