You might have heard the term free radical before, but few people know what they actually are. When a single molecule that resides within a cell in our body is left with an unpaired electron, after it has split, a free radical is formed. When this happens it loses it's stability and tries to regain it from the molecule next to it by taking it's electron. After this occurs, both molecules are considered free radicals and a chain reaction is started. The cell that is being compromised loses it's stability and ends up dying. The tissue also becomes damaged.

As nasty as it sounds, free radicals are not always something to be concerned about. They can be created by the body to encourage healthy metabolism or fight off an infection. When the body is healthy free radicals pose no problem at all. They become a danger when the immune system has been compromised or is in a state of weakness.

Free radicals can be created by things such as toxins in the environment, pesticides and smoke from cigarettes. There are also studies underway that are linking free radical damage to diseases such as cancer, heart disease and strokes.

The best thing you can do to combat damage from free radicals is to make sure that there are plenty of antioxidants in your body. This helps to stop the cells from oxidyzing. Foods that contain antioxidants include vegetables and fruit that are high in vitamins A, E and beta carotene. Free radicals are likely to cause no damage, or less damage, when these molecules are present.

For hundreds of years, herbs and homeopathic remedies have been used to support our body's cells and combat aging. Roobios is an important herb that has antioxidant properties. Green tea has these same properties with the added benefit of antibiotic properties. Grape Seed Extract is a very strong source of antioxidants.

You should try to eat vegetables 3 times a day, and fruit 2 times a day. Make sure that one of the fruit portions is citrus because they are a very strong source of antioxidants. When you cook foods they tend to lose some of their antioxidants so you should take care how much you cook your meals. Herbal teas should replace your usual teas or coffees because they are a great source of antioxidants. Make sure that you drink your 8 glasses of water each day to keep the cells fully hydrated. Eating nuts is also a wise choice because they are full of antioxidants. Make sure that you do not go overboard because their fat content can cancel out any health benefits they can give.
