Plastic surgery is the reconstruction of various parts of the body through a surgical operation. This surgical operation is valued by people who seek to remove birth defects, defects due to disease, burns, and other cosmetic reasons.

A plastic surgeon is a surgeon who must specialize in plastic surgery. These plastic surgeons must go through over eleven years of school, residency requirement, internships, and much more.

Then, they still have to have two years of real practice before they become board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. When they become board certified they reach the Gold standard in the plastic surgery profession.

A plastic surgeon who has been board certified is one of the best plastic surgeons available. This is a huge reassurance to the public.

Plastic surgery is generally used to improve the way a person looks. This surgery has resulted in increase self confidence and self-esteem.

In turn, increased self confidence and self-esteem help a person develop new attitudes and abilities to succeed. Plastic surgery affects much more than the human body by altering emotional health for the better.

The most common plastic surgery procedures include Breast Augmentation, Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck), Liposuction for Body Lifts, Arm Lifts, etc., facial surgeries such as Face Lifts and Rhinoplasty, as well as nonsurgical procedures like Botox injections.

New methods and procedures are constantly being developed and implemented. Plastic surgery is implementing the use of the most modern laser technology available.

As with all surgeries, there are risks involved with the process. The use of lasers results in less risk of infection, complications, and lower hospital and recovery times because they are self-cauterizing.

However, a properly trained and certified plastic surgeon can minimize these risks. Before committing to a plastic surgery procedure, be sure to ask the surgeon if he or she is a surgeon who was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

The surgeon will be assisted by a variety of nursing personnel including the anesthesiologist, the recovery room personnel, and technicians. Consider asking about their qualifications.

To ease apprehension about an upcoming surgery, ask where the surgery will be performed and adapt yourself to the idea. Very few of the plastic surgery procedures can be performed at the surgeon's office.

Most surgeries will take place at the hospital or surgical care center. Consider asking about the facilities and if they maintain the proper health standards and have the necessary certifications by the proper agencies.

It is also vital to become aware of the possible side effects, or risks, involved with the plastic surgery procedure. Potential risks include blood loss, infection, and scarring.

These things are generally very rare with today's modern technology, but they do happen occasionally. If there are complications, it can mean additional surgery and fees to fix the side effects.

Some plastic surgeons have special insurance that will cover patients who face complications from surgery. Check to see if the surgeon you are thinking about will have this added support should things go wrong.

It is also extremely important know how long it will take for you to recover from the surgery. This will affect how much you can work or your participation in other activities.

One of the biggest questions is which type of anesthesia should be used. There are three main types of anesthesia that are typically used.

Local anesthesia has relatively low risks and is used during low risk and not very invasive office procedures. IV sedation, or "twilight sleep," is a general or local anesthesia.

The risks associated with the other two types of anesthesia will be discussed with you by the surgeon. He or she will allow you to choose which type of anesthesia you would like best after he or she gives you a recommendation.

Asking these questions will help you be less anxious on operation day. Plastic surgery can greatly improve looks, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
