Our daughter is a certified nursing assistant. She was able to obtain that certification in high school with concurrent enrollment in a local technical school while completing her necessary credits for her high school diploma. It has proven to be a great college job with very flexible hours. She has mostly worked in the home care side of the industry in Phoenix.
Home health care is the perfect blend of assistance for those still able to be somewhat independent but who need a little extra health. Her duties include light house work, fixing simple meals, bathing the elderly, helping them read their mail, helping them get into bed at night and reminding them to take their medication.
Light house work includes cleaning up after the day, sweeping, vacuuming, doing load of laundry and making beds. Meals are mostly sandwiches, opening cans of stew or soup, eggs or other simple fares with fruits and vegetables if they are available. Trying to introduce healthy options to their diets.
She would take vitals when ordered, pulse and simple assessments.
The needs varied greatly depending on the client. Some just needed an hour to chat and check in with and help with simple tasks. Other clients need more extensive care with bathing, shopping, housework, and food. For these clients she would have between four and eight hour shifts at their houses. It all just depended on the needs of the clients. Home care in Phoenix is accommodating depending on the needs and wants of the family. Some is funded privately others is Medi-care funded.
She has enjoyed her work with the elderly and has formed special relationships with some of her regular clients. It is often exhausting and tiring, but the rewards make up for the physical strain. It is important to get home health care people that mesh with the clients personalities and needs.
As our population grows older having the choice for them to stay in their own homes and retain some independence is so important; care centers are rarely the alternative our loved ones would choose over home health care. It is more cost effective and usually more pleasant for all involved when their needs are attended to.
