A couple of weeks ago we got a note home for our son that it was time for his maturation class at school. There was the permission note and then a little bit of information of what they would be covering. My son is pretty matter of fact and when I asked him if he was nervous about his maturation class he told me he wasn't nervous at all. He said it was just a part of growing up. I definitely liked that attitude for a child that was starting to face those "growing up" things in life. Then he said to me, "I feel bad for the girls, because I hear that their maturation class is gross." I laughed and told him that they were just facing different things with growing up and maturing than the boys.
Being a girl I remember the things they covered in the girls maturation, but I had never been to a boys maturation class. They invited the parents to come so I went with my son to his maturation class. Compared to the girls maturation class I couldn't even imagine what they would cover with the boys that could even remotely be hard to swallow. Of course, there were the basics, but after the maturation class I had confirmed that it is definitely the girl that faces the greater challenges with growing up and maturing.
I was talking to my friend that was in charge of the whole thing after all of it and she was talking about the information that is included with the girls bags. Of course, they get their pads, but there were also pamphlets that were included with their stuff. She said that the opening statement on the pamphlet was, "It is Your Choice, Be Informed." She said that it took them to a website and it talked about the menstrual cycle, but what it really covered was the choice of getting pregnant.
She said that she found the information interesting, but that she found the title to be the most interesting. It is their choice to get pregnant, but once they get pregnant there are several more things to consider. Whether to keep the baby or to have an abortion or put the baby up for adoption there are several choices and it effects more than just the girl. She pointed out that at that point it is important that the girls do their research and talk with different people and even companies that can help them weight out their options. She pointed out from adoption agencies to even abortion clinics they will want to be informed before making a decision.
