There are many things in our society that have a lot of emphasis placed upon them. Whether for good or bad, there are things which seem to be placed on pedestals to which all can look up to and try to achieve. What is one thing that you think about when it comes down to what our society values? There are many things that I value in my life and some of them coincide with society's values and others do not. One thing that I want to talk about today is the value our society is placing on perfection.
Our society is full of people who work very hard at being the very best. They want to be the very best in their field of work, the very best student at school, the very best parent and so forth. However, can one person truly be the very best at something so that there is no room for error? Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone has flaws. We aren't like some super god or goddess with endless power and beauty, yet our society sometimes places too much emphasis on having the perfect this or that. This case is especially true when start thinking about our body images.
I heard a statistic the other day that said the number of people going to get cosmetic procedures done each year was in the hundreds of thousands. Can you imagine how many people are having unnecessary surgeries just to look and feel more attractive? I believe this yearning for a perfect body and face is engrained into our minds from a very young age. Think about your role models growing up. Most of them were probably models at one point whether they were athletes or musicians. They get put on the cover of a magazine and seem to have the perfect nose, teeth, skin, etc.
What else would we want to see when we look in the mirror other than the perfect nose, teeth, or skin? New technologies are being created everyday to make cosmetic procedures safer and more effective. Ultrasound liposuction procedures are being performed more often and they are even advertised on many news and television shows as a way to get the message out that we all can look better with a little suck here and a little suck there.
Instead of focusing so much on our attention on outward appearance, could we just try for a moment to focus on what is really important? A person's heart and soul, the very things that make this person uniquely who they are, is worth much more to me than what size of jeans they can squeeze themselves into.
