Just spend one night in any dance club and watch carefully at people who are enjoying themselves dancing the night away. No matter what dance style they are dancing to, you will see arms swinging, feet moving and hopping, hips gyrating and one thing for sure, they are perspiring and drenched in perspiration because they are dancing for hours sometimes with no breaks in between. How is that for a robust aerobic exercise and having fun at the same time?

Now, do you get the picture that vigorous dancing is a fun and is also a fantastic cardio exercise? Is it any wonder why most, if not all professional dancers have such flexible, slim and well toned physiques? So if you want to lose weight the fun way, try dancing instead.

The interesting thing to note is that most people who enjoy dancing are not even aware that how good an exercise dancing is for their health and fitness. You see, with all the activities they are doing, dancing burn tons of calories, improve blood circulation, tone and strengthen muscles, improve endurance and flexibility and even make their heart and lung function better because of its cardiovascular effect. So which activity do you prefer to have all the health benefits mentioned above, an hour on the treadmill or dancing for the same duration?

One good idea is to try ballroom dancing with a partner because now the benefits will help two people instead of one and furthermore, ballroom dancing will improve your poise and elegance in the social context. Just a clarification because most people think that ballroon dancing is all about old fashion waltz. It is not, as long as a couple is dancing together with some form, it is ballroom dancing. For example, cha cha, tango, samba, rhumba, jive and lindy hop are the various form all ballroom dancing.

Here is another great benefit to dance regularly and that is you may live longer because dancing actually relieves stress and tension and by this, it may keep many stress related illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart attack and even stroke away. Furthermore, it is a fact that couples who dance together stay married longer. This is a fact.

So add dancing to your fitness and exercise program and have some fun while you lose weight instead of just pounding religiously on the treadmill. Since dancing is inexpensive and convenient, why not take up ballroom dancing lessons with your partner? All you really need is a just desire to have fun and the willingness to learn how to dance with elegance.

For people that have never learnt how to dance, the most difficult part is to make the decision to learn dancing or enrol for dancing lessons in dance studios. Yes, taking lessons from good instructors may be very expensive and inconvenient. However, have you thought about the idea of learning how to dance from home with DVD instruction or online dancing lessons? Now, you can dance to your heart's content with only the price of the DVDs and in the comfort of your home until you are ready to hit the dance floor to show off your new found skills.

The wonderful thing about dancing to lose weight is that people of all ages and abilities can learn how to dance. Whether you are just adding dancing to your existing exercise program or to use it as your starting point for a new fitness and health program, you should approach "dancing to lose weight" as you would with any other fitness program.

For the elderly folks who have not exercised in a while, do take less strenuous lessons and don't overdo it. As your stmina and endurance increases, then add more energy to your dance. Just listen to your body and it will tell you when what you are doing is enough or not. Remember, just like any exercise program, it is advisable to warm up with stretching exercises and cool down at the end of your lesson. So if you want to lose weight, why not learn how to dance instead.
