There are many things that can cause chest pain. Angina pectoris is one that is considered a bit more on the dangerous side. Unlike indigestion, angina pectoris actually involves the heart muscle. This condition happens when there is not enough blood and oxygen flow to the heart. The pain is caused by the obstruction of the arteries that supply blood to the heart.

The chest is not the only part of the body that can feel the pain from angina pectoris. It can also be felt in the neck, jaw, back and around the shoulders. More men experience this type of disorder than women. Typically, it only occurs to those over the age of 50 but sometimes younger people suffer from it.

CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) is what causes angina pectoralis. Over time, deposits line the walls of the arteries and eventually lead to a blockage. The buildup of these fatty deposits is medically termed atherosclerosis. When the arteries become brittle and blocked the pain can be felt in the chest.

If you are feeling tightness in your chest you should talk to your doctor, just in case. He/she will give you a complete physical exam, look over your medical history and consider the symptoms you are experiencing. The doctor will then try to rule out other conditions that cause similar symptoms, such as, indigestion or some type of physical injury. Once other causes are ruled out they will perform a few additional tests to discover if you are suffering with angina pectoris.

Stopping the progression of heart disease is the first line of defense when dealing with angina pectoralis. This can be done by eating a healthier diet, quitting cigarettes, getting rid of the fat and getting plenty of exercise. Listening to your doctor and living up to your obligations can help you live a longer and more fulfilling life.

Herbal remedies can also help to supplement what your doctor recommends for you. Hawthorn is often used to protect your body from the damage that blocked arteries can cause. Passiflora incarnata has a calming effect on your mind and body. It helps your blood vessels relax and also lowers your blood pressure. Guelder Rose Bark helps to relax your muscles and is a great cardiac tonic. Starting a regimine using these herbs is a good idea if you want to prevent angina pectoris from happening in the first place.

Use these herbs in conjuction with whatever your doctor recommends and always be sure to tell your doctor when you are adding a new herb to your diet. Do not stop taking the medication your doctor prescribes unless you let him know first.
