With all this talk about losing weight and weight loss surgery, it's easy to forget that weight loss surgery is a major undertaking. As with all operations, there's always the chance of complications; something might go wrong that is beyond the help of a doctor.

Depending on the type of weight loss surgery you have chosen, the complications may occur. For an operation as drastic as stomach stapling, it could be as bad as a life time of malnutrition and constant monitoring of nutrition, or worst, the surgery goes wrong, and some part of your stomach or intestines wasn't sutured properly.

These complications could be so bad, that you end up losing your life. Worst of all, most weight loss surgeries are either impossible to reverse or very hard to reverse. There is no way for you to go back to your original self once for those surgeries - the deed is done.

So perhaps the best way to avoid these risks and complications is to choose a surgery that minimizes it. And one such surgery is the adjustable gastric band, aka the lapband. The lapband is completely reversible, safe, simple surgery. Although it isn't without its own complications, when compared to other weight loss surgery options, it has the least complications, and the complications are no where near as bad as the other ones.

Lapband surgery has one great advantage over the other surgeries - it is reversible! If you want to remove the band, a simple procedure could make that happen, as if no alternation is made to your stomach. Over a short period of time, your stomach will recover and return to its original form. However, keep in mind that the band is intended to stay in your body forever, and it is usually recommended that you do not remove the band unless absolutely necessary.

So the lapband does have its own complications, but what are they? As with all surgeries, death is always a very rare possibility. There may be a chance where the lapband slips, or band erosion. The port site, the place where the saline solution can get put into may hurt. Or the bulb, tubing, or band may leak.

There's also the small chance where your stomach, esophagus, liver, or spleen may get injured, or you might experience major blood lost. If the complications are serious, although rare, the surgeon may have to switch to open surgery. However, the risk of any danger is always very low. Lapband surgery has proven to be a safe medical procedure with little to no complications.

Ultimately, if you do experience any discomfort or pain resulting from the surgery, always tell your clinic. Although the complications are small and very rare, if left untreated, it could very well lead to major consequences. Lapband surgery really does look like a nice, and safe option. It doesn't require cutting or stapling of your stomach at all, and since it is done laproscopically, there's less pain, and virtually little to no scarring, and very short recovery time.
