Having pain in your shoulders is such an inconvenient undertaking. It prevents you to do certain things that you want to do and even things you needed to do. There are many common causes of shoulder pain such as ageing and overuse of the tendons. As one gets older, the elasticity of the tendons will be lost gradually making it a bit difficult and sometimes even painful to do simple tasks such as raising your arms, throwing a ball, doing some exercises, and putting on your clothes. It is very important though that accurate diagnosis should be done in determining the cause of the symptoms so appropriate treatment will also be applied.

Other than ageing and overused of tendons, other main causes could include frozen shoulder, calcific tendonitis, shoulder instability, shoulder dislocation, and arthritis. There are a number of treatment options you should follow to fix your shoulder problem some of them are found below along with steps you can follow to apply them.

One of the first treatments you can do for your shoulder is one that is fondly called as the RICE method which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Once you experience pain, you need to rest your shoulder for at least 48 hours. This should be done without disturbing it and without moving it unnecessarily. With an ice pack, apply cold temperature on the injured area for around 4 to 8 times in a day for 20 minutes each time. Never put ice directly on your shoulder, if you do not have an ice pack, use a plastic bag filled with ice, or wrap frozen vegetables inside a towel. Next step is to apply controlled compression on the affected area to reduce the swelling with the use of elastic bandages. After which, keep your shoulder elevated above your own heart with the use of a pillow placed under it. After some time of doing this and the pain still persists with no mark improvements, then it is time to visit your doctor.

The above method can also be combined by buying pain relievers. These kinds of medications are usually combined with substances that can reduce the inflammation. Make sure to take these over-the-counter medications with a full stomach since most of them are a bit acidic and you don't want to have another part of your body in pain just because you haven't done any precautionary measures.

If after taking the medications you still feel pain, then that should be a sign that you need to go to your doctor. Once you visit him you will probably be offered options to cure your shoulder pain. Be ready to accept that some options may include surgery and physical therapy. Discuss the options well with your doctor if it has to go through that way so that you will definitely understand the need of going through the process.
