Oral hygiene is something that is highly valued in our society. Because of the importance put on a healthy smile many people have been brushing twice a day since they were very young.
It is important for parents to teach their children how important it is to brush their teeth every morning and every night. What is often overlooked by parents and by children is flossing.
This phenomenon is not something that should be perpetuated. Flossing is the most important thing that you can do to keep your mouth and teeth healthy.
People are often times surprised to hear how important flossing is. If you ever have to choose between brushing and flossing you should floss first.
If you floss first you will be ensuring that your teeth and your gums stay as healthy as possible. It usually ends up that you will make time to brush your teeth after you floss because that habit has been so ingrained.
Make flossing a habit that is ingrained as well. You only have to floss your teeth once a day to maintain a healthy mouth.
It is most beneficial to floss your teeth at night because if you do not brush at night you will be allowing the bacteria to sit on your teeth all night long. If bacteria sits on your teeth for an extended amount of time it will eventually begin to produce acid.
The acid that is produced will eat away at the enamel on your teeth. Enamel seals your tooth and protects it from outside invaders.
You should try your hardest to maintain and keep the enamel on your teeth as strong as possible. The more enamel you have on your teeth and the longer you keep the enamel the less money you will have to fork out in dental bills.
If you are not a consistent flosser and you go for a long time without flossing your teeth the bacteria between your teeth will eventually harden. When this bacteria hardens it is called tartar.
Not flossing for a long enough period to allow tartar to build up between your teeth may cause you serious problems. For starters, the tartar that builds up can only be removed by your dentist.
If the tartar is left untreated more and more bacterium will begin to consolidate with the tartar. Your gums will quickly become irritated and inflamed because of the bacteria that they are constantly in contact with.
At this point, your gums will be swollen and red. They may even be painful.
When you start to feel any of these symptoms you should make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. If you leave these symptoms untreated it is plausible that it will turn into periodontal disease.
Having periodontal disease will be extremely painful and it can be expensive to correct. You should avoid this disease of the mouth by flossing at least once a day.
Periodontal disease occurs when the gingivitis begins to not only invade the gums but also moves to the bones and the infrastructure of your mouth. When these structures are attacked your teeth may begin to feel loose, you can lose teeth and you can lose bone.
You do not want to experience the uncomfortable pain that comes with periodontal disease. If you are feeling these symptoms you should visit a dentist immediately.
The longer that you wait to have your problem fixed the worse it will get. The worse that the problem gets the more expensive your bill will end up being.
It does not matter what kind of floss you floss with. Find a brand that works for you and does not fray or break easily.
Some people cannot find any floss that they like so they decide to go with an electric flosser. There are even new water flossers that spray water directly between the teeth to loosen the bacteria.
No matter how you decide to floss, just do it. For your sake you should be flossing your teeth every day.
If you have not flossed your teeth in a while you may see a little bit of blood on the floss. This is completely normal and after a few weeks of flossing consistently you should not see any blood at all.
Another plus of flossing is your breath will start to smell better naturally. You will be removing a lot of the bacteria and plaque that causes bad breath.
Flossing is good for your mouth. Make flossing a habit.
