Learning how to take BP on your own is very essential especially if you have a tendency to develop high BP or other sicknesses. As such, monitoring your BP can be a quick indicator of something wrong with your overall health, and give you ample time to keep your health in check before it gets worse.

Moreover, if you live far away from hospitals or clinics, understanding the steps to help you learn how to take BP is really valuable. There is no need for you to rush to the hospitals or clinics just to have a reading.

Basic steps to learn include the following:

First: Be Sure Your Equipment is Working Well.

There are several monitors for taking one's BP. These include: The Digital device (also called as the automatic or electronic BP monitor), the Finger BP Monitor, the Aneroid (or Manual) equipment, the BP Monitor Cuff, the Pediatric BP Monitor device, and the Wrist BP Monitor equipment. Whatever you choose from among those types, what's important is to check if your device works accordingly before you use it.

Second: Position Your Equipment Correctly.

Various monitors for checking your BP is used differently. Some have cuffs for the hand. Others would require you to use it on your arm. And others are used by placing your finger in the cuff. There are also other devices, like the Pediatric Monitor device, that not only has a cuff to use but also an LCD video game that children can watch while on treatment and monitoring.

For accurate readings, it's important to sit comfortably while checking your pressure, and position your arm, wrist, or finger at the right level without straining yourself.

Third: Understand the Process.

It merely takes a few seconds to read your pressure with the equipment you choose. Typically, as the reading progress, you will feel the cuff tighten a bit. Be sure to take note of the reading before the cuff deflates to its original form.

Fourth: Learn how to read the results on the device.

As soon as the cuff goes back to its original form, normally, three readings would appear. However, this may vary according to the model of the device you are using.

The typical readings have the following details: Pulse beats are measured in beats per minute, and the BP reading is done in millimeters (mm) of Hg or mercury.

A normal reading for BP is set below or at the same levels of 120 over 80 for its top and bottom reading. Normal pulse rate has an average of 72, or is between the numbers 60 to 80 at rest.

Fifty: Understand the Results.

It is imperative to be relaxed and comfortable in taking your BP. It is also recommended that you do this not immediately after smoking or exercise or your pulse rate and BP readings would be higher than normal that you may suspect that something is wrong with you when in all reality, there is nothing wrong with your health.

High readings would be set around 140 over 90 (also written as 140/90). Very high rates are in the range of about 200 over 100.

These are the basic steps to help you understand more of taking BP on your own. When you know how to take you own measurements, you can make that first important step in keeping yourself healthy.
